Port Renfrew Marina Report Sept.18/16

For Port Renfrew Marina Coho fishing slowed down a little, especially offshore. Since then, before the rain, fishing improved again. Inshore at Camper Creek large Coho are being caught by anglers targeting spring salmon. Lots in the mid to high teens are hitting the docks and they are beauties.  Coho are now in the bay and river mouths so even if you don't have a boat shore fishing is now an option. Chinook fishing is winding down after a generally slow year although we did see quite a few come in, mostly in the twenties. Hopefully we get lots back to the river and will report when we hear from the hatchery.

Halibut fishing is improving and has had a little to no pressure in the last month. If you head out watch the weather as this time of year we can start to get SE winds again.

Port Renfrew Marina has completed our end of the water line and once the line if done from the other end we will be connecting up. It is looking like that will be after the marina closes.

The results from Port Renfrew marina's Labor Day Derby are as follows;

  • Port Renfrew General Store gift basket              $715.00
  • Islander Reel from Islander Reel                      $1620.00
  • Pelican Cooler donated by Joe Serpa                $660.00

Live Auctions:  A total of $3255.00    Silent Auctions: $1835.00

With misc cash and check donations the grand total is so far $11,234.50, we are pretty pleased with this amount and it will be more once we have our annual Coho Derby "Winner Take All" coming up in October and also the monies raised on our ongoing raffle for the nights stay at the Villa Eyrie Resort and a days experience of driving luxury high performance cars on the Van. Is. motorsport circuit...see below. Tickets are available at Port Renfrew marina and the draw will be done on October 2nd. After that time we will be posting the total amount being donated to the San Juan salmon hatchery.

Port Renfrew Marina Report Sept.10/16

For Port Renfrew Marina we can only do reports when we are between times up there so reports can be behind in information at times. Well... this is HOT off the press! One hour ago. Coho fishing is fantastic!! Limit catches for all and some big fish with 15 and 16 pound Coho's being brought in. Reports are that Steve Bryant brought in a 21 pounder! It has been years since we had one over 20 pounds. Looks like there will be lots this year. Things are looking good fishing wise now! There are still springs around in good numbers but with the Coho here, why bother? Nice to have the choice at this point and time.

The ongoing water line is nearing completion. It is looking like it will be in working order for next year as there have been delays and our season will soon be coming to an end.

Port Renfrew Marina Report Sept. 7/16

At Port Renfrew Marina soon after our last report Chinook fishing turned on again. Chinook fishing is very good right now. If you want to get an extra edge try jigging the anchovies that are under the marina docks. They are silver and green and and work very well after brining in salt. Small teaser heads work well with them but anchovies in general are the way to go. The real surprise is the Coho fishing. In the twenty years we have been here we have never seen this many, this large, this early. Lots of limit catches, with fish up to 19 pounds already! You can get them on the beach but the best place seems to be in 300 to 350 feet of water down 35' to 40'. Spoons and hootchies in green, white or yellow seem to be working well. We would say that this is shaping up to be the best Coho year since 2000.

For halibut, no one has really been fishing lately but while it generally slows down in August, by mid September it picks up again. Good currents in the next two weeks should make for some favorable conditions.

This past weekend was Port Renfrew Marina's 19th annual Labor Day Derby. It was another great success with 271 tickets sold. The weather on the Saturday was a wonderful early autumn day, warm, calm seas and no fog. Sunday the fog arrived and a bit rougher waters but not enough to stop the anglers from trying to catch the winning spring, all in all two great days of fishing. On Saturday there were 136 salmon weighed in with even more than that caught as we only weigh one spring per ticket. On Sunday with the shorter hour, final weigh in time was 1:00, there were 50 fish weighed in. Luckily the fire ban had been lifted so the evenings were a great time to sit back and talk about the days fishing.

Derby Winners:

  • Brian Paulson  37.15   First place
  • Ian Batty  30.8             Second Place
  • Mike Styba  28.14        Third Place

Woman's biggest fish: Judy Thorarinson  25.5       sorry, no pic of Judy or Mike and apologies for the head chops!

Kids Bullhead Derby:

  • Boys winner:  Brooke
  • Girls winner:  Kiana

For Port Renfrew Marina many people helped make this derby successful. We had a different direction for the dinner this year. While in previous years we had someone local prepare and serve it, this year we had to create the menu and the Lake Cowichan Kinsmen served it up for us. PRM wants to send out a huge thank you to Clayton Wright who coordinated the incredibly generous donation of Tim Hortons chili, cups and spoons from the owner of the Duncan restaurant and others, Greg Adams. Clayton Wright managed to get the donation and bring it to the marina, get the cookware arranged, helped in arranging how to get it all prepared (it is not done in a conventional way). Clayton took time out of his days to personally super clean the pots and donated his propane tanks for cooking. We can't thank him enough for all he did.

Like most derbies we held some silent and live auctions which went well but the most outstanding one was when Judy Eilertsen's famous blueberry cheesecake was auctioned. It started of at $200 and very quickly jumped to $715.00 by Ian Batty, it was then put to Judy Thorarinson to match the difference to make it an even $1000!! She did and the cheesecake sold for the $1000.00! That's what we call real enthusiasm for the salmon enhancement cause!

When it comes to donations anyone who has done this knows that it is a huge job. We have had a few people who help out over the last three years and we also couldn't do it all without them. There are a couple people who really put their time in for us and they are Vic Gee and Sharon Winters. Both of them go to many businesses and tirelessly go from one to another in their area. We have help from others also, Brian Kitagawa, Larry DeFrane, Jack Hughes, Debbie Gilmore, Linda Bondu, Grant Hilliard, and many individual donators. All are listed at the bottom of the report. We thank all those who do this work for us, it means everything to have that kind of help.

For a derby there is endless help needed, in setting up, keeping track of auction tables and raffles and clean up, etc. Again when it comes down to the crunch we can always count on a few people and Sharon Winters stands out amongst them all! She is up for whatever you need done and puts in hours of her time with out any complaints. She is amazing and so organized and can calm things down so things aren't spiraling out of control! We can't thank you enough Sharon, you are wonderful. Having said that we had lots of help from others in setup, take down, clean up, and general running around. Thanks go out to Dennis Summerhayes, Linda Holman, Cheryl Gillard, Gwen Coleman, Dave Mills, Paul Ricard, Doug Larsen, Dave & Doug Mills, Sadie (granddaughter of the Holman's). A special thanks goes out to Joe Serpa for letting some of the band members stay in his little cabin.

And last but not least we give a huge thanks to the Kinsmen, Dustin Mayo and his wife, Crystal (who happens to be pregnant and still pitched in hugely), Brian, Steve and Allan. They were great, doing whatever was needed to make this work and had the help of Dolores Forsberg, Brooke and Gabrielle Winters, Diane Clarke, Alex Gummeson and Claire Cooper who helped prepare the food ready for cooking.  As you can see the list is long and it all comes together with all of their help, from small to big jobs, they are all important! If we have overlooked someone please accept our apologies!

So the derby was a success with a great showing of Chinooks caught over the two day period many of the entrants coming back with great catches and after the presentations and dinner, the band, Mathison, played into the night with many of the marina's customers and derby entrants dancing and celebrating the weekend. Not a bad way to say farewell to summer and look toward the fall.

Upcoming Event: Coming up on October 1st and 2nd Port Renfrew Marina will be having it's annual Coho Derby "Winner Take All." Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.30/16

At Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing slowed right down on the weekend with the exception of the Gagen and Hydes boats that had their limit of 6 springs both days. Everywhere was generally poor fishing. Even East Point got very quiet. Tuesday saw a great improvement, with Chinook in all the regular fishing spots. While anchovies are the bait of choice, spoons are working as well. Coho killers are a popular choice also.

Farther to the west "hole in the wall"to the NitNat gap has been very good, just pick a good weather day.

Nice sized Coho are showing up on the beach, with some hatchery fish pushing 12 pounds. Still to early to target them offshore. It looks like it may bode well for the Coho derby coming up on October 1st and 2nd.

Halibut fishing has had no pressure, we know of only one boat up on the top end of the closure that got some fish. The halibut fishing should improve towards mid September.

Crabbing is still fair with most people getting a couple for the pot.Considering what crabbing is usually like this time of year, this is a bonus.

Notable catches:

  • Grant Graver   31
  • Barrell Gallant  34  hatchery  Sorry for the head chops!!

At Port Renfrew Marina and the area of Port Renfrew are still under the campfire ban. For additional information you can go to www.bcwildfire.ca. Some areas on the island are opening up so it may be that Renfrew will soon also, we will try and keep you updated. For a map showing the areas affected go to http://ow.ly/AIGB303J6nB.

Port Renfrew Marina Labor Day Derby: Coming up this long weekend will be the marinas 19th annual Labor Day derby and things are moving along well. This year the Lake Cowichan Kinsmen will be serving the dinner. The success of a derby depends so much on the help from businesses so the funds can be raised for the cause which in this case is the local salmon hatchery and such a deserving cause it is! We all want to see the salmon stocks kept alive and well for ourselves and future generations. Donations have started coming in and we hope to collect more so keep that in mind if you think you can help, we also can always use help with collecting donations and we are always in need of helpers to set up the tables, sell raffle tickets, etc the day of the derby. If you have a donation or know of a place who would be interested let us know asap. The derby is a super fun event and if you haven't attended it before you should come and see for yourselves what a great time it is, bring a friend to participate. It is a two day event wth many prizes including hidden weight, biggest fish for a woman and a teen under 16 and silent and live auctions and raffles. Dinner tickets are available for those who aren't in the derby but would like to participate. The same band will be playing again this year, so get your dancing shoes ready!

At Port Renfrew Marina this year there will be a form to fill out voluntarily for fisheries to help them determine fish stats. This form is optional and should you want to fill it out below is their reason behind the form use. Fisheries will be donating a $70.00 gift certificate for gas at PRM in a draw from the entries they receive.

There is some worry by recreational fishers that treating derby weekends the same as other days of the month is resulting in over‐estimates of the recreational fishery catch. To explore and protect against this potential, the Port Renfrew Marina 19 Annual Labor Day Derby is partnering with DFO to improve recreational catch estimates and management in the west coast portion of Juan de Fuca. The goal of working with DFO is to have our derby catch known exactly and not have it estimated by the creel survey. This will improve overall effort and catch estimates, which will lead to improved management and regulation of our fishery. To achieve our goal of improved catch estimates and be entered in the derby prize draws, you must fill out the catch information on the opposite side of this sheet. Bring this completed form to the derby weigh‐in station. Official weights will be recorded on the form and the form submitted as your derby entry. This information will be added up to document the total catch in the derby so the catch does not need to be estimated by DFO.

Raffle Item: Port Renfrew Marina is raffling an Islander Reel donated by them to raise funds for the local salmon hatchery. It is a MR 2-LA Mooching Reel called ARBOR SLATETickets are $5.00 or 3 for $10.00 and available at the marina. Buy a ticket and support the hatchery so you and generations to come can enjoy the sport of salmon fishing. Value of the reel is $625.00.

Another Raffle Item: Again the Port Renfrew General Store has generously donated another gift basket for raffle for the Labor Day Derby. This basket is full of some amazing items, such as a bottle of  Ketel vodka, Gran Reserva Bacardi rum, 1 bottle of quality red wine, & a bottle of salted caramel Baileys, a ceramic LED candle lantern, a box of Purdy's chocolates, cedar salmon wraps, acrylic plates and bowls, 1 pound Salt Spring organic coffee, Stash organic green tea, bamboo reed diffuser, 4 stemless wine glasses and much more, all sitting in a metal beer cooler tub with a built in bottle opener on the side.  It can be viewed at Port Renfrew Marina now. Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00, what a deal for a basket of approximately a $300.00 value! And yet another Raffle Item: Port Renfrew Marina is also raffling a Pelican ProGear 95 liter Cooler, generously donated by Joe Serpa. Can be seen in the marina office. Value of the cooler is $500.00. Tickets available at the office at $5.00 a ticket or 3 for $10.00. Again all proceeds go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery.

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.22/16

For Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing continues to be very good with lots of comments of "just like the old days!" Fishing has definitely picked up and seems to be staying. Seems as though there is a good tide for the first couple of hours after daylight and then a very good bite in the early afternoon. All the usual spots are producing fish everyday. Hot teaser heads are  bloody nose, glow green and chrome mint pearl and a few others. Some anglers are trolling medium size herring and are doing very well. Coho are starting to show up which is a good sign of things to come soon. Some hatchery fish are up to 12 pounds already! Should make the coming Coho Derby on October 1st and 2nd an interesting and exciting one. Probably a little early at this point to target Coho but they are a nice incidental catch.

Halibut has slowed down but there is a very little pressure as all anglers are focused on the springs right now. Crabbing is still quite fair to good, not as many but nice big hard ones for the most part.

Important News: As of Aug. 17th there are no campfires allowed in any areas of Port Renfrew, no exceptions and not allowed until further notice. Be vigilant with any thing that could start a fire and FYI the fine for having a campfire is $1100.00. Conservation officers are on the lookout for violators. We all love a nice campfire but the risk is too high, we could lose so much of our beautiful forest and last years fire was terrible, with road closures for two weeks.

Notable catches:

  • Wallace Cheong  32
  • Kevin McKenna  43

Water Line: Some of you may be wondering about the water line. It is coming along slowly, we will soon have the line done to the road and then we need to wait until work on the other side will be done. Once it's completed we can get hooked up. It is starting to look like it may be operational fully by next season but maybe sometime in Sept if things go well.

At Port Renfrew Marina this year there will be a form to fill out voluntarily for fisheries to help them determine fish stats. This form is optional and should you want to fill it out below is their reason behind the form use.
