Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.10/17

Port Renfrew Chinook fishing remains strong all along the beach. Early morning at East Point has been very good but the crowds of boats tend to make for combat fishing. Not for the timid! If you are into evening fishing East Point will have hardly and boats and the fishing turns on again towards dark.Camper Creek is still "old reliable." It continues to produce quality springs all season long. Anchovies are the bait of choice but a whole herring trolled without a flasher can be dynamite. As for lures, Coho killers, skinny G spoons are doing well as is a white hootchy on a short 32" leader.

The chicken ranch is still hot for springs and Coho. The halibut at Bouy Juliet have kind of dried up for now but on the bright side anchoring up closer to shore is working again.

Crabbing has tapered off some but most people are still coming is with a couple and still a good size.

This year Owen Point closes Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 not the usual Aug. 1

Notable catches:

  • Mike Graham  28
  • Al                       33
  • Colleen Luttman  30
  • Shane Morse  31

Sorry for all the head chops!!

Upcoming Event: Coming up soon on Sept.2 and 3rd is Port Renfrew Marina's annual Labor Day salmon derby. This year will be the 20th! If you have been before you know how much fun it is and if you haven't you should come and see for yourself! This year the tickets will be sold at Bucky's in Duncan and at the marina. If you buy your ticket from Bucky's you will need to come by the office when you get to the marina to get your t-shirt. The tickets are $65.00 a rod and include a Port Renfrew Marina t-shirt, dinner on Sunday, beverages and a live band. The proceeds will go to the local San Juan salmon hatchery to help keep salmon stocks healthy and strong, not just for you and I but for generations to come. Come out and support this great cause and have fun doing it.

Another Event: Coming up also will be Port Renfrew Marina's annual "Winner Take All" Coho derby. This one is insanely popular and for good reason. The tickets are $25.00 a rod with $5.00 of each ticket going to the hatchery and the rest into a pot for the person who catches the biggest Coho. The pot on average runs around $10,000.00 cash! It's a great way to end the fishing season in Renfrew as the waters tend to get to rough after mid October and the rains come.

Raflle Items:

Calcutta 50 liter Cooler: generously donated by Joe Serpa  Value: $239.00

Calcutta High Performance Coolers are built to last and keep ice much longer than average, everyday coolers. The super tough roto-molded exterior has up to 2" of insulation throughout the cooler. With an EVA lid seal, these High Performance Coolers will keep your contents cold for several days when packed with ice. Raised, non-slip feet will keep your cooler in place in the back of your truck or on the boat deck. An oversized drain plug makes emptying the cooler a breeze when the ice does finally melt.
