Port Renfrew Marina Report June 26/13

At Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing is picking up along the beach and should improve more once these big tide changes are finished. We are seeing more anglers coming back to the docks with catches and a few in the high twenties and a couple in the thirties. The "chicken ranch" continues to be the hot spot for springs, coho and halibut. Grubs, salmon bellies and bait are all good for catching halibut. The new halibut hoochie that is seeming to be a hot one is the Turd. They seem to be the magic lure lately.

Coho can be found at the can-bouy in the hundreds and there seems to be enough hatchery ones to get your limit of two.  Fish at depths of about 30feet. Spoons are all you need for Coho and the coho killers are hot lures also, with just about any color working very well.

Crabbing remains about the same, with some improvement.

Notable catches:

  •  Eric Eckdahl  27 29
  • Bud McGrade   35

Upcoming Events:  Coming up soon on July 26th to the 28th will the the annual Davey Derby held at Port Renfrew Marina. This is a derby that you wouldn't want to miss, with amazing prizes and just an all around great, fun time. For more info go to www.daveyderby.ca  Audie Williams is the founder and brains behind this event and it is done with great intentions to help deserving families and or individuals who are going through tough times and need some help.

Coming up later at the end of summer (who wants to think about that!) but the Port Renfrew Labor Day Derby helps you get past that and have a great time on the Labor Day Derby and it's also a super derby to attend. The derby is a two day event ending with a dinner, beverages and a live band and you go home with a t-shirt . All proceeds go to the local San Juan Fish Hatchery's to support them and their work to help keep the salmon stocks plentiful in Vancouver Island, BC and in general Canada. A very good cause since this poor hatchery has not seen any additional funding since 1992.

We want to thank again all customers who support our marina. We want everyone who comes and stays with us to have good memories and know we care about every one.
