Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.17/16

At Port Renfrew Marina this is a quick update on Chinook fishing, it has really picked up the last few days! This is more like what we are used to and expect for this time of year. The good news it seems that all areas, from East Point over to Camper and on are all producing. The beach is the place to be, even the guides are fishing the beach, the bank is quiet right now. If you have been waiting for the turn on then your wait is over, get out there and get catching fish! Halibut fishing is very slow right now and crabbing is fair which for this time of the year is pretty good considering its usually done by now.

A days catch from last week for Wayne Winters and friends

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug. 11/16

For Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing remains good since our last report. Seems one day is very good then the next a slow down and then the next day is hot! Welcome to fishing prediction! Some anglers come back with limits while others struggled to get one or none but happily most are coming back with their quota of springs. East Point early AM (daylight) till about 8:00 is a good bet.Thirty seven feet on the rigger seems to be best. Out to the west the bite is later, even mid afternoon. Forty five feet, give or take, is the best depth. While anchovies are the bait of choice, some fish have been eating squid so take a chance with a while hootchie on a short leader.

Halibut fishing has slowed right down after a fantastic year. Inshore and offshore there are few to be found although there is still some time left to fish for them. "Chicken Ranch" seems to have died off for now. Getting tough for springs and dry for halibut.

Along the beach it seems that the springs are here and maybe the best is yet to come with the numbers and sizes growing.

We are still working on the new water line and it is looking like it may take more time than we thought but we are working on it on a weekly basis.

Port Renfrew Marina Report Aug.2/16

As of the last report at Port Renfrew Marina Chinook fishing remained fair to good with the exception of Monday afternoon when it really turned on. Lots of nice springs hit the docks and there were lots of smiling faces. Rockpile and west on the high slack tide was the winning combination for most anglers. With the early morning tides many took the opportunity to sleep in which was a nice change.

Offshore fishing was on hold for a few days due to weather that was too rough to get there safely or comfortably. With no pressure for a few days the spring and hali fishing was very good, with salmon, early in the day is best.

Crabbing is still good with the heavy traps producing the best. It is important to have the trap sit stable on the bottom and not be shifting around.

Port Renfrew Marina Report July 27/16

Port Renfrew Marina is happy to report that the Chinook have finally hit the beach! Lots of limit catches hit the docks in the past 2 days. All the regular spots are producing fish. Depths are the usual 31 to 43' on the downriggers. Anchovies are the bait of choice but if you find needlefish when you are cleaning try putting out Coho Killers.

Chicken Ranch is as per usual and should continue for another month. We do not have an inshore hali report as of right now as spring fishing is the number one choice!

Port Renfrew Marina Report July18/16

As far as fishing goes in the Renfrew area there is not much more to add from the last report. Beach Chinook fishing though improved some, remains quiet. This seems to be the tend all along the lower west coast.

Chicken Ranch fishing is hot and cold with the salmon being mostly on the smaller side. Halibut has slowed down.

Inshore halibut remains very good. Try some new spots on the anchor for limit catches! All the best fishing has been to the west. East of the bay is all dogfish.

Notable catches:

  • Chris Allen  34.9 (from the previous report time)
  • Hugh Hamer  28
  • Chris Flint  30.4
  • Mary Dice   31.5
  • Judy DeFrane   30
  • Manning Watson  28
  • Gord & Keri Dolbec  30  20

Hoody Derby:  Last week Port Renfrew Marina held a very informal small derby in memory of Blair Houdayer, a long term regular at the marina and well loved by everyone. This year was the second one and was attended by about 25 fishermen who all had to fish by cut plugging as Blair always did. The fishing was very slow but the feelings of remembering Blair and having a day of fishing in his name was the most important. The winner this year was Greg Jones, the grandfather of Matthew Jones who won last year. $855.00 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Kinsmen Derby: This past weekend Port Renfrew Marina held the second annual Kinsmen Derby. It was a great derby with over 200 tickets sold for a solid turnout. It was a two day derby with a hamburger dinner included on the Sunday. Fishing for this derby definitely improved some, happily. The weather held up nicely and the seas were calm. The freezer draw raised $2136.00 and the funds went to the local Port Renfrew Park. The side bet raised $890.00 and that money went to the San Juan Hatchery. The Lake Cowichan Kinsmen club raised approximately $10,000.00 to other widespread causes with a total of monies raised approximately $13,000.00 for the derby! Not bad at all for only it's second year running, thanks to all who participated and or donated to this great derby with well deserved causes.

Winners:

  • First Place:  Bob Biggs   33.5                        $2000.00
  • Second Place:  Joe Serpa    29.11                 $800.00
  • Third Place:  Jay Degoesdriand    26.2      $400.00

Sorry, no picture of third place winner

Ongoing work:  The water line is moving along and we hope to have it up and running soon, work gets done every week and we hope for completion in the next month or sooner.
